It’s officially Scholarship Season and we’d like to invite you to join us again, in selecting our 2022 NWF Scholars! Since 2017, Newwave Foundation has awarded scholarships to deserving high school students through our partner organizations.
As a reflection of our mission and vision, we like to seek out individuals who are passionate about learning and pursuing higher education despite the odds stacked against them. Many scholarship programs typically specify GPA requirements, but we believe in getting to know the whole student beyond just grades. Therefore, our primary criteria is a resilience essay, giving students the opportunity to share a time when they were faced with adversity in their lives and how they persevered.
Over the past 4 years, we’ve been touched by some of the most incredible stories from our Scholars, which shed light on their strength and ability to not allow their setbacks to define them. It’s important for us to be that resource for young men and women who deserve a shot at their own success, so we could really use your help in selecting from the hundreds of applications we received this year.
In addition to reading and partaking in the interview process for our 2022 NWF scholars, we are also seeking volunteers to write blog posts, share creative digital content ideas, participate and judge our upcoming Code-A-Thon or be on standby to assist with our numerous webinar events. Collegebound Foundation Spotlight

Collegebound Foundation is one of the key partner organizations that administers our NWF Scholarship program. For over 30 years, Collegebound Foundation has helped more than 67,000 Baltimore City public school students achieve their dreams of a college education. They deliver need-based funding through “last dollar grants,” and manage an annual scholarship portfolio valued at $3 million, of which we are a proud participant.
We recently sat down with Jennifer Covahey, Director of College Success at Collegebound Foundation, where she shared interesting insights about the organization’s impact.
NWF: How did you get involved with Collegebound Foundation?
Jen: I’ve known about CollegeBound since I was a high school student raised in Baltimore City, and my high school fortunately had a CollegeBound advisor who helped me navigate the college application process. After I graduated from University of Maryland College Park, I returned to Baltimore to work for CollegeBound Foundation. I have always been passionate about my community and CollegeBound Foundation allows me to support and inspire our Baltimore City youth from high school through college!
NWF: What kind of organizations does Collegebound partner with?
Jen: CollegeBound partners with any organization interested in helping Baltimore City Public High School students get to and through college. Our partner organizations can provide scholarship funding, internships, volunteers, and more, to support our Baltimore City students.
NWF: What criteria is required for a high school student interested in being a part of Collegebound Foundation?
Jen: Students must attend a high school offering CollegeBound services. We are currently staffed in 16 public high schools across Baltimore City. Parents and students can email CollegeBound at scholar@collegeboundfoundation.org for more information.
NWF: Can you share a success story of one of Collegebound’s students, and where they are now?
Jen: One of our Collegebound students, who happens to be an NWF scholar, fled from their home country alone when they were 16 years old. They are still working on their citizenship application and remain an undocumented student, which means they are not eligible to receive federal or state financial aid. Through the NWF scholarship, this student was able to attend community college, and currently has a 3.6 GPA. They will graduate with an associate’s degree in May ’22 with hopes of transferring to a four-year college to continue studying Engineering and exploring STEM-related career paths.
NWF: How has Collegebound’s partnership with NWF been beneficial?
Jen: Partnering with NWF has been extremely beneficial for the students of Baltimore. NWF has assisted six students so far in achieving their dream of attending college by alleviating their financial burden with scholarship assistance. Additionally, NWF offers excellent resources and workshops related to important student-related issues, such as financial security and mental health, which are accessible to all CollegeBound scholars.
NWF: On average, how many students does Collegebound support per year?
Jen: CollegeBound supports over 2,000 Baltimore City Public High School students each year.
NWF: Does Collegebound have any upcoming events?
Jen: We have three major upcoming events:
- Freshman Success Seminar on June 4, 2022 which will feature rising 9th graders and their parents, discussing what students need to do in high school to be college-ready.
- Rising Senior Seminar on June 19, 2022. This event provides workshops to students and parents on the process of college applications and financial aid.
- Annual Scholars’ Luncheon on July 14, 2022 to celebrate our recently awarded scholarship recipients, scholarship providers, volunteers, current CollegeBound scholars, CollegeBound alumni, and MORE!
